What could it buy?

In Belgium a French franc was worth the same as a Belgian one. In 1880 an adult factory worker earned about 2.50 to 3.60 francs a day: this coin was about a third of a day's pay. In Brussels it bought eight glasses of faro.

Approximate, in the prices and wages of the time.

The story

Silver 1 franc from 1881, struck in Paris during the Third Republic. The inscriptions REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE and LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE are clearly legible.
